GATE has launched two new papers for GATE 2022, one of them being Geomatics Engineering (GATE GE). If you love remote sensing, and geographical data and want to pursue it as a career, this could open doors for you.
Did you know ISRO deals with a lot of geomatics! They have setup a institute called Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS). It is the key institute for geospatial technology and remote sensing. Not just that, how about ending up in high paying jobs & work with latest advancements like machine learning?
We will see the following sections
GATE Geomatics Syllabus and Sample Paper
The syllabus for GATE GE is purely on geomatics-related topics ranging from remote sensing to surveying and photogrammetry.
General Aptitude: 15 marks
Engineering Maths, Remote Sensing, GNSS & GIS: 55 marks
Part B: 30 marks
Part B - you have to attempt only one section out of the following 2
Maps, Land Surveying, Aerial Photogrammetry
Data Quantisation & processing, Digital Image Processing, Radiometric & geometric corrections, Image enhancement, transformation, segmentation & classification.
There are questions which a Civil Engineering student can quickly answer with the knowledge of surveying and subjects like remote sensing, photogrammetry. This is definitely a plus for a Civil Engineering student and they can start concentrating on rest of the subjects.
What is the benefit of attempting GATE Geomatics?
Earlier, if you had to pursue geomatics-related studies / remote sensing related studies - the option was to write papers like Civil Engineering / Engineering Sciences & so on. In these, you had to study subjects which are irrelevant to geomatics and remote sensing. Imagine, you want to be in the geomatics field, but you have to study subjects like structures to get into it. This makes it difficult for an geomatics enthusiast to get a good score in these other papers.
But now, you have a paper purely based on geomatics-related subjects. If you really like it, you will have a fair chance at GATE now.
Who can give it as primary paper?
The intake into geomatics higher studies varies from college to college. With the introduction of the new paper, we will have to see if the eligibility changes. Going by the last year information brochure of IITs, we can find out the eligibility.
This is the brochure of MTech admissions in IIT-Bombay for the year 2021. Here they have given BTech/BE eligibility of branches ranging from Agriculture, Computer Science, Civil to Electrical, Geology, Physics and more.
There are more institutes which offer courses like Remote Sensing, Geomatics, Geoinformatics which can accept this GATE score. Here are the possible institutes which can accept GATE Geomatics score
Who can give it as secondary paper?
Students who are writing Civil Engineering as a primary paper can attempt Geomatics Engineering as a second paper.
If you want to attempt GE as your secondary paper, the primary papers can be- Agricultural Engineering (AG), Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC), Environmental Science & Engineering (ES), Geology and Geophysics (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mining Engineering (MN) and Physics (PH)
APSEd is launching a dedicated course for GATE Geomatics Engineering on August 14th.

What are the opportunities after GATE Geomatics?
Geomatics has opportunities both in the research field and has good number of opportunities in the private sector side as well.
This will open up doors into Masters course in Geomatics, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing and PhD opportunities.
Institutes offering M.Tech in GATE Geomatics
Note these points before you read further
IITs, NITs & other institutes which were already accepting students through GATE score are more likely to take students through GATE GE as well. M.Tech courses like Geomatics, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing have more chances
Institutes like IIRS which had their own admission procedure - we will have to wait & see if they will accept students through GATE GE as well.
You can also use this score in institutes & places which just ask for GATE Score
List of institutes offering M.Tech in Geomatics / Remote Sensing
IIRS, Dehradun
IITs [IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, etc]
IIST, Trivandrum

Will there be PSU options?
There cannot be an affirmative answer to this. But yes, it is possible to get into ISRO or related space centres either through GATE Score or through M.Tech in Geomatics / Remote sensing for scientist positions.
Here are professors from DTU & IITs as quoted
“The decision to add Geomatics Engineering will be a boon for those seeking admission in MTech and PhD Geoinformatics. Now aspirants will be able to take this exam by following a specific syllabus for the subject. This will eventually help them score better,” says Colonel Kailash Chandra Tiwari, professor, Multidisciplinary Centre for Geoinformatics, Delhi Technological University, who played vital role in inclusion of Geoinformatics/Geospatial Technologies as a subject in GATE.
“The subject is in great demand worldwide because satellite/earth observation data is used by all countries irrespective of whether they launch satellites or not,” says Tiwari.
GATE qualified candidates in Geomatics Engineering will be able to apply for MTech /PhD in various institutions including IITs. “Other than IITs, students can apply at IIST/IIRS, Delhi Technological University and many other universities,” says Tiwari.
Raaj Ramsankaran, associate professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), says inclusion of Geospatial Science and Technology popularly known as Geo-informatics or Geomatics Engineering will increase the popularity of the subject.
“Additionally, GATE qualified candidates can also apply for recruitments in PSUs including ISRO, Space Applications Centre (SAC), one of the major centres of the ISRO and DRDO among others,” says Ramsankaran.
