Difference between Torque and Bending moment

Difference between torque and bending moment

Both torque and bending moment are types of moment and also have the same units (N-m); So where lies the difference?

In simple words, bending moment causes bending of the section and torque (Torsional moment) causes twisting of the section.

If we talk about stresses induced,

  • Due to torque - predominantly shear stress is induced in section

  • Due to bending - predominantly we have normal stresses

Given a section and a moment is applied, then how do we decide that this moment is torque or bending moment ?!

It depends on the axis about which moment is applied!

  • If moment is applied about the longitudinal axis - it causes twisting of the section - then we call it torque

  • If we apply moment along transverse axis - it causes bending of the section - then we can call it bending moment

APSEd Founders

Hi! I am Aditya, co-founded APSEd with Palaniappan.

Our brain can accumulate and memorize things to a certain extent. Once it is overloaded, some of the facts and formulas you remembered fade away over time.

All this becomes easier once we understand the concept and know how to apply them. This is what we strive to achieve through our courses.

Our Courses + Your Effort = Success in exams!
